One of the most common mistakes in peoples websites is that they try to say or show too much on a site.  Unless you are

a retail site with a lot of product, this is almost always a bad idea.

A website should remain very simple, and always have some call to action.  You have about 10 seconds to catch your visitors attention, and in that time if you do not, they will click away faster than greased lightning.
